He's just not one to fight back, not even when his father raises his hand against his younger sister. But there is a much bigger and deadlier threat to the children: The "Grabber" has already kidnapped five boys. So far there is no trace of them. Gwen keeps dreaming about those kidnappings, a man with black balloons and a black van. Sometimes their dreams come true. Then Finney falls victim to the grabber, who always hides his face behind a mask. He takes Finney to a basement from which he cannot escape. Inside is just a mattress, a toilet, and a black phone that isn't plugged in.
There are several things one could imagine the grabber doing to its victims. Never seeing her again only makes it worse in the imagination. He tells Finney he won't do anything to him - that he doesn't want to. But, and that much can be said without giving anything away, what the gripper is really up to, it never becomes clear. Not even the criteria he uses to select his victims. Some were bullies, others more shy and reserved. Some tall and powerful, others slim and slender.
